Bangkoks Best Bars
Bangkok has long had a reputation for world class bars. The hotel industry has been a major source of momentum in terms of design, setting and vision for creating places that both the international jet set and the locals are clamoring to head over to for an evening’s drinks.
There have always been a number of private bars to visit, but one of the symptoms of Bangkok nightlife is that what is in last week is no longer hip this week. Many great bars have come and gone from Blues Bar on Sarasin Road to White Café on Sukhumvit 49.
New entrants have in time emerged like Q Bar and Clubs like Bed Supperclub but even these have become victims of time and so newer establishments are sprouting up all the time.
Apoteka is on Soi 11 which has become a kind of hub for Bangkok nightlife though not always in the best of ways. Soi 11’s residence of Bed Supperclub and Q Bar cemented its relationship with Bangkok bar hounds but a milieu of bars and clubs sprouted up around Soi 11 that weren’t always up to scratch. Apoteka flows against that trend with a cute Apothecary style bar and a sister bar on Soi Thonglor.
There’s a vaguely New Orleans film set feel to Apoteka with wrought iron railings, bottle displays and French doors. Apoteka makes an effort to provide live music in addition to the ubiquitous DJ’s that fits in thematically with the visuals through audio such as blues music.
We assume the moniker Apoteka is down to the extensive drinks list and drinks mixing skills being dispensed like candy from a Harlem Dealership in the 1970’s. In addition to the usual drinks there is a number of engaging imported craft beers on the drinks menu. Well worth paying a visit for.
WTF has been opened since 2010 and though its name on the internet is known as what the f**k there’s a more parent friendly version if you Google around that serves up Wonderful Thai Friendship. This is an accurate name as the owners of the bar a Thai and Farang Couple are some of the nicest people you could wish to meet.
WTF is both a bar and a Gallery so it serves a purpose as cultural meeting point as well as a crossroads for people in need of refreshment. The bar is tucked away in Sukhumvit 51, Alley 7 so you might need to ask around for its location if you’re near to Sukhumvit Road as it’s not far but not so easy to locate being towards the rear of a local supermarket.
WTF Bar has built up a reputation as a decent curator of Bangkok Metropolitan artists including young talent and seasoned stalwarts. The property is quite slim and cozy so expect to bump into people you know and those you don’t. Khun Som and Khun Chris are the owners so keep an eye out for one of Bangkok’s loveliest couples.
