Finding an affordable apartment on Sukhumvit Road

Finding an affordable apartment on Sukhumvit Road

Whether you are new to Bangkok or have been here for several years, the same dilemma always comes up when searching for a new apartment, where is the best place to live in Bangkok? It basically all comes down to your budget and lifestyle choice, but without doubt the most popular area for Westerners in Bangkok are the cosmopolitan sois of Sukhumvit Road.

Now there are no shortage of apartments available up and down the vast length of Sukhumvit Road, new apartments are coming available literally by the hour, but it all comes down to how much you are willing to pay.

This isn’t the cheapest area of Bangkok by any stretch of the imagination, and a nice modern apartment, located close to good transport links, with decent building facilities, may be stretching your budget a little bit too far. But rear not, there are still lots of affordable apartments and good deals to be found around Sukhumvit Road, and the key to finding somewhere within your budget is not necessarily about who you know, but what you know.

Studio

Studios Vs one-bedroom

If you are on your own and looking for a one-bedroom apartment, take the time to also check out the studios on offer. Studios often have a reputation for being cramped, claustrophobic, and cheap, but that isn’t usually the case. Some modern Bangkok studios are more spacious than your average one-bedroom apartment, and studios are usually far cheaper too.

By switching your search to a studio rather than one-bedroom apartment you should immediately see more options within your budget. You may be put off by the potential lack of living and cooking space, but if you are planning on a very active professional and social life in Bangkok , living as a true downtown Bangkokian, you are likely to find you will not be spending that much time in your apartment. Unlike back in the west, Bangkok has a great culture for eating out, with excellent and affordable food on almost every street in town, in fact in most cases it’s cheaper (and nicer) to eat out than it is to cook at home.

BTS

Rethink the location

You may have your heart set on something around the top end of Sukhumvit Road, close to the bright lights and bustling downtown action, but as you are no doubt already finding, apartments here aren’t cheap! Fortunately the BTS sky train systems is fast, cheap , and reliable, and runs from the crack of dawn to midnight, meaning you don’t have to live in the centre of downtown to be just minutes away from the action.

The BTS Sukhumvit lines runs all the way from Bang Na and Bearing to Nana, and all the way through to Mo Chit and Chatuchak. Take a look at some of the neighbourhoods and apartments around areas such as On Nut and Udom Suk. Here you’ll find some lively and friendly communities, with nice, modern apartments available at the fraction of the costs of similar places on upper Sukhumvit. Not only will you find lots of local shops, amenities, and entertainment on your doorstep, if you are situated close to a BTS station then you are just moments away from the downtown action.
